Sweet Little Hobo

A Sidewalk for a Bed

Fair warning. This page may upset the reader but I  decided to speak bluntly despite that fact. The subject matter demands that anyone who loves children  needs to shout loudly that this must not ever happen to even one little child. It simply is beyond comprehension that any child should be so mistreated.

None of us likes to even think that a child could be simply cast aside like the most unfortunate of family pets who have become a burden  or inconvenience to those who have been charged with their care. But it happens ... and far more often than we can allow ourselves to even consider. Abandoning a child seems unfathomable as there are so many more reasonable solutions but there are those among us so bereft of any semblance of cognitive thought or reason that they do exactly that. That they could be so unfeeling and  inhumane is, of course, inexcusable, and an act which will someday come back to haunt them, but that doesn't help  the innocent child left to perish.

Society does provide answers for those hapless parents who  are so lacking in love for their child but to the worst of these monsters even bothering to seek the resources available to them is simply too much trouble. How does any parent walk away from a helpless baby or tiny child  with no regard as to whether they will be found, if they will be rescued and taken into care, or even if they will  starve to death or worse?  And yes, monster is exactly the correct label for such a cretin.

Even when we read or hear about the parent who leaves a child alone with no one to feed them, no one to tuck them in, no one to comfort them when they are afraid, just so that parent .. to use the term loosely ... can go on with their own activities unencumbered by their parental duties ... even for a few hours, breaks my heart.  The lack of any sense of responsibility or love for their child astounds me. To leave a child alone for extended periods of time definitely indicates that creature passing themselves off as a human being is beneath contempt. And most assuredly not worthy of being called a parent . I seriously question whether they are even human.

We read of atrocities where a mother or father takes the life of a child or children  to whom they have given life and the immediate thought which crosses our minds is ... "how is this possible ? What kind of parent would do such a thing ? They must be insane." But what of the babies and young children  who are discarded like trash ... and which we seldom hear about. After all, they don't make nearly as sensational a news story. And for the most part,  only those charged with the care of such children are even aware of their misfortune. And sadly at times, only when it is too late.

Society prefers happy stories to facing up to the number of children who are abused or abandoned. It's easier to not see what goes on, often right under our noses. No one wants the unpleasantness of interfering and perhaps making a baseless accusation so too often it's 'take the easy way out'.  Just don't see the signs. And who suffers ? Those helpless little angels who only ask to be loved and allowed to live lives free from fear.

Is that really too much to ask ??? I don't care what it costs. Heaven knows we spend enough on much less worthy projects. Most assuredly we can spare the time and the money to safeguard the most innocent and vulnerable among us.

Cast Out Child

Little kid in ragged clothes,
Uncombed hair and snotty nose,
Love does not come to rest,
Near the heart of Gods’ blest.

No bed to lay a tired little head,
Feet so blistered and turning blood red,
Tummy gnawing nothing to eat,
Cold and tired yet no place to sleep.

Where is mommy, where is my dad ?
Poor little child, treated so bad,
Left on a side street, in a dense fog,
Cast away like an unwanted dog.

No one to turn to, no one to care,
Mommy and daddy why aren't you there?
Choosing a cracked sidewalk for a bed,
Come morning light the small child is dead.
